Collinsville High School senior Melanie Gutierrez was selected to receive a 2026 Racial Harmony Award from the Center for Racial Harmony.  The award was presented on February 22, 2026.

The Center for Racial Harmony is located in Belleville, Illinois. The organization is dedicated to promoting understanding, cooperation and communication among all races and ethnic groups.  Each year, they recognize students who have gone above and beyond to promote goodwill and respect.

Ms. Gutierrez was nominated by Collinsville High School (CHS) teacher and Multicultural Club sponsor Barbara Lindauer.  

“Melanie Gutierrez is the kind of student who naturally brings people together,” said Lindauer, “In a school environment where students come from different backgrounds, personalities and experiences, Melanie stands out as a true peacemaker, someone who consistently promotes goodwill, kindness and inclusion among everyone around her.  Her actions, both big and small, reflect a deep sense of empathy and an understanding that everyone deserves to feel valued and accepted.”

Gutierrez has helped shape a school culture of empathy, cooperation and mutual respect. As Multicultural Club president, she ensures students feel supported and celebrated. Her collaborative leadership has helped ensure CHS events such as Mr. Homecoming, Miss Snowflake and the Multicultural 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament are celebrations of diversity.

Barbara Lindauer said, “Melanie promotes goodwill not through grand gestures, but through consistent, thoughtful actions that make people feel seen and valued. Her presence enriches the school community and serves as a powerful example of how one person can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.” 

Melanie Gutierrez is the daughter of Jose and Ernelinda Gutierrez of Maryville, Illinois.
