Yesterday CHS administrators were provided a video that contains an offensive chant at a high school sporting event this past fall. I want to be clear, this is not acceptable behavior!
Sadly, polarizing and derogatory statements are a part of society and are occurring more frequently in day-to-day activities without regard for the well-being of others. Regardless, they have no place in our school system where students deserve to feel safe and comfortable, and enjoy themselves while attending school and school events.
As stated earlier this week, we would be oblivious if we felt our district couldn’t improve cultural awareness and acceptance. This is evident in conversations with a diverse group of district employees and students. Unit #10 takes great pride in our diversity, but we realize work remains to be done.
Collinsville CUSD #10 is committed to improving cultural awareness and acceptance. We understand that change will not occur overnight and there is work ahead of us to allow students and staff to heal, expand their knowledge, and most importantly, embrace our differences.
Our school district is committed to growing and improving. I ask everyone to please…think about your words…your actions…and how they may impact others. If your words may be offensive or your actions may be derogatory, then they are best kept to yourself.
Treat others like you would like to be treated and please be safe!
