The Collinsville Middle School math teachers have chosen to take part in the Math-a-Thon to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, was founded by late entertainer, Danny Thomas. This is a facility that specializes in childhood diseases and works closely with the Ronald McDonald House. It provides service at very little or no cost to families. The “Math-a-Thon” provides schools an opportunity to unite community service and education.
CMS students are asked to collect “per problem” or “flat pledges” from parents, relatives, neighbors, etc. In a few weeks the students will complete a grade appropriate booklet consisting of approximately 200 problems and correlating with the mathematics curriculum. The students will be awarded various prizes based on the money they collect. Among other prizes, each student who raises $35 or more will receive a free ticket to Six Flags St. Louis.
To increase involvement, those students who raise enough money for St Jude’s to earn a free ticket to Six Flags will be rewarded with a field trip to the theme park in May. This is to recognize our students’ for helping others in need.
Over the last 3 years, CMS students have raised over $9,000 for St. Judes. If you know a 7th or 8th grade student, please consider sponsoring him or her in this year's Math-a-thon. If not, feel free to send your generous donation to Ryan Stolcis at CMS. Please make checks payable to St. Judes.
We appreciate your continued support and look forward to making this a successful community service project.
