CHS Ranked 5th in St. Louis Metropolitan Sports Programs

The St. Louis Post Dispatch recently ranked Collinsville High School 5th in metropolitan school district sports programs:

1. East St. Louis
It's all or nothing for the Flyers, and when they're good, they're really good. They won Illinois titles in boys and girls track — the first school to do that since old East St. Louis Lincoln in 1984. East St. Louis reached the semifinals of the Illinois football playoffs in the second-largest division, and its girls basketball team was ranked third by the Post-Dispatch before losing in the regional finals. The school produced the P-D's girls basketball player of the year, TeAndrea Smith, who is going to Illinois, and defensive football player of the year, Brandon Harold, who is headed to Kansas State. The school also had two state champions in track, Ronecia Nash, who won three events, and Kraig Appleton, who was also a first-teamer in both football and track. Terry Hawthorne was also a first-teamer in football, and Detchauz Wray was the Post-Dispatch sophomore of the year in football.

2. Lafayette
The 2004-05 program of the year winner won one state title, in softball, and finished third in girls swimming. The Lancers' football team and boys and girls tennis teams all reached the state quarterfinals, and the girls soccer team lost in the round of 16. Gabriela Demos won the Class 2 singles title in tennis, and the football team landed two players, lineman Caleb Welchans and linebacker Matt Brewer, on the all-metro squad. Lafayette's basketball team, with star forward Tyler Griffey, went 18-9.

3. SLUh
A very good year for the Jr. Billikens, who excelled in both big and small sports. The cross country team won the state title, soccer finished second and baseball lost in the semifinals. The football team reached the state quarterfinals, as did the tennis team. In sports where there aren't enough teams for an official state competition, SLUH won in water polo and volleyball and was second in lacrosse.

4. Berkeley
The Bulldogs won the boys and girls track titles in Class 3 and finished third in Missouri in girls basketball, with the boys team losing in the quarterfinals. Alishea Usery won state titles in the 100, 200 and 400 meters and the 800 relay on her way to being named the girls track athlete of the year. Meghan Lewis was an all-metro selection in girls basketball.

5. Collinsville
Nothing new to see Southwestern Conference teams among the area's best programs. Four of the seven large-school honors have gone to Southwestern teams. The Kahoks reached the quarterfinals in boys soccer, girls volleyball and baseball, and finished eighth in girls bowling and 10th in boys bowling.

Congratulations to the "High School of Champions!"
