Birthday Book Club
According to a 2005 Illinois study, “school
libraries contribute measurably to the academic
achievement of students as reflected by their
test scores. At all grade levels, test scores
tend to be higher” (ISLMA,
2005).
?
Research Finding:
Students that visit the library more
frequently receive improved reading and
writing scores.
?
Research Finding:
Students with access to larger, more
current book collections achieve higher
reading, writing, and ACT scores.
The Collinsville Middle
School Media Center wants to continue to
provide quality and current resources
for the students of the Collinsville
Community. The Birthday Book Club
is a great way to support our efforts in
providing a great service to the
children of our community today, and in
years to come.
With a donation of $20.00
or more, the Media Center purchases
Follett hardbound books to create a
special birthday collection. Follett
offers high-quality, award-winning books
for our birthday club that are
guaranteed. These titles are officially
added to the library collection each
time a student chooses a book on his
or her birthday. The student’s name and
birth date are inscribed on the birthday
book labels provided by CMS Media
Center, and the child has the honor of
being the first one to check out the
book. It’s a great way to attract
students to reading, to give them a
special appreciation for the books
they’ve selected, and to help the
library continue to build a
current book
collection.

We Collect Box Tops! All
Box Tops help to replenish our frequently used
books shelves. CMS collected 9,471 Box
Tops for the 2006-2007 school year! At the
end of each tri-mester the top 2 Reading Classes
that turn in the most Box Tops will receive a
free pizza party during their lunch period.
Birthday Book Continued...Adolescence
is one of the most complex times in one’s life. It is a
time of physical and mental growth; a time of expanding
horizons, self-discovery, and emerging independence. The
events and actions during adolescence can shape an
individual's life course and thus the future of the whole
society (Carnegie,
1995). Our goal is to provide a birthday book
for every child who attends Collinsville Middle School.
Enrollment for the 2006-2007 school year was approximately
972 students during ISAT testing. With your help, we will
continue to be better prepared to shape our students’ lives
as readers, researchers, and lifelong learners.
We Read a Lot!
New students and parents to CMS soon
find out that our school READS! For the 2006-2007
school year CMS read a total of 14,538 books. 7th
Grade won the Reading Count Cup by out-reading 8th grade
7,425 books to 6,882! So the average student read 15
books for the year. The Media Center respects and
encourages the right of every parent to choose what their
child reads. In order to help parents make those
choices, young adult interest stickers have been place on
those books designated by our reading program Scholastic Reading Counts
as young adult.
However, please be aware that books like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Cheaper by the Dozen, and
Stephen King's IT are all considered young
adult interest. In the end, the decision
rests with the parent and the Media Center encourages parent
participation in the student's book selection.
